Our operations

Our operations currently consist of the New Vaal Colliery, New Denmark Colliery, Kriel Colliery, New Largo Coal; the newly acquired Klipspruit Colliery, Khutala Colliery and Middelburg Mine Services, as well as several other projects at different life stages, which we are committed to develop into the future to contribute to the growth of Seriti.

With our operations we aim to provide sustainable, reliable, and transformational energy for South Africa, the South African Development Community (SADC), Sub-Saharan Africa and global coal export markets.

Kriel Colliery

Situated 45km south of eMalahleni (formerly Witbank), Kriel Colliery was established in 1975 to supply coal to Eskom’s Kriel Power Station.

Kriel’s underground operation is mined by means of the mechanised board- and-pillar method, while its opencast operation mining takes place using dragline as well as truck and shovel methods.

Over the last five years, Kriel has won the Anglo American CEO Gold and Silver Safety Award for a large operation, the Golden Loerie Award for its innovative Snakes Alive safety initiative, the Integrated SHE Platinum Five-Star NOSA award and many others.

The colliery employs just over 1,000 people and produces around 5Mtpa of thermal coal. The Kriel colliery has sufficient current and additional coal resources to supply Eskom’s Kriel Power Station until 2029.

New Denmark Colliery

Commissioned in 1982, the New Denmark Colliery is situated in the Highveld coalfields, about 30km north of Standerton, Mpumalanga.

One of the deepest coal mining operations in South Africa, New Denmark is a mechanised mine, with the bulk of production being sourced from one extraction unit using longwall mining methods.

The mine has an impressive safety record and has won the Anglo Coal Chairman’s Safety Shield for its consistent improvement, as well as the Anglo American CEO Safety Award for the best safety record of all Anglo American operations worldwide.

New Denmark employs over 850 permanent employees and 600 contractors, and supplies 5Mtpa of thermal coal to Eskom’s Tutuka Power Station. The mine has sufficient current and additional coal resources to supply the power station until 2039.

New Vaal Colliery

Established in 1983 to supply Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station, the New Vaal Colliery is situated on the banks of the Vaal River in the Maccauvlei area immediately south of Vereeniging in the Free State Province.

The operation utilises opencast strip mining methods to mine the remnant coal pillars that was a result of the underground extraction mining methods practiced in the area in the 1960’s.

The mine currently produces at a rate of 17Mtpa and aims to continue the supply to Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station from additional coal resources until 2039.

New Largo Coal

New Largo Coal is a 45% shareholder of New Largo Coal (Pty) Ltd (“New Largo Coal”).

On 1st August 2018, New Largo Coal acquired the New Largo reserves from Anglo American.

A majority black owned and controlled company New Largo Coal intends to develop the New Largo Mining right into a large scale, long life coal mine in order to supply 12Mtpa (million tons per annum) of coal to Eskom’s Kusile Power Station over a 50-year period.

Negotiations with Eskom commenced in August 2018 on the development of the New Largo resource, which will be developed in three stages with the objective to meet the Kusile Power Station ramp-up requirements as far as practically and commercially possible.

Klipspruit Colliery

Klipspruit Colliery is situated 5km from the town of Ogies and the Phola Township and the new KPSX Project is situated 7km from the town of Ogies and 2km from Phola Township.

The operation is an opencast mine using dragline, as well as truck and shovel operations, to extract coal. Commencing operations in 2003, Klipspruit Colliery produces 2.4 Mtpa (DB) and 0.35Mtpa (AD) for domestic consumption and 5.1 Mtpa (AR) for export.

Coal from Klipspruit Colliery is beneficiated at the Phola Wash Plant for both the export and domestic markets.

Khutala Colliery

Khutala Colliery is situated in the Witbank coalfield, located approximately 30km southwest of the town of eMalahleni, and approximately 100km to the east of Johannesburg. The operation was commissioned in 1984 and open-cut operations began in 1996.

The mine is an underground bord and pillar operation and supplies coal exclusively for Eskom’s Kendal Power Station, situated close to the mine shaft.

Khutala produces 5.5 Mtpa on average to the Kendal Power Station and has sufficient resource to supply the power station until 2033.

Middelburg Mine Services

The Middelburg Mine Services is located in the Witbank Coalfield in Western Mpumalanga and is situated between the towns of eMalahleni, Middelburg, Hendrina and Bethal, approximately 25 kilometres due south east of eMalahleni

Commissioned in 1979 the Middelburg Mine Services operation is an opencast mine using dragline, as well as truck and shovel operations, to extract coal, and has sufficient resources to supply the Duvha Power Station until 2034.

The operation provides 6.5Mtpa on average (AR) of power station grade coal to the Duvha Power Station and 9.0Mtpa on average (AR) of higher quality export grade products for the seaborne steam coal markets. Export coal is transported to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, while coal for the Duvha Power Station is delivered by a conveyor belt.
